Inhaltsangabe:   Series I consists of 6 subseries (manuscripts, letters, documents, printed matter, images).   All materials from this series were found inside books from Karl Wolfskehl's library which Wolfskehl sold to Salman Schocken in 1937. Presumably in the cataloguing process after its purchase or when most books were sold off in an auction in Hamburg in the 1970s, the materials were taken from the volumes and stored in a separate box. An archivist/librarian of the Schocken Institute recorded from which volume they were taken by writing the title of the book or the signature it had received on the documents. Some materials, however, show no such indication, which means the original position i.e. connection to a volume cannot be retraced.  The inventory of the library (see Series II, Subseries 3), which was created in the cataloguing process, occasionally also lists materials attached to the books.   The materials often - however not always - have a clear connection to the volume they are taken from: The document might be written by the author of the book, refer to the topic of the volume, and/or indicate its provenance.
