Bemerkung: Adrien Albert was a colleague of Eccles' at the University of Sydney, and a pioneer of Chemotherapy Personal and institutional correspondence, some references to research. 8.4.46/11.10.1946 Albert communicates decision to leave the University of Sydney for the Wellcome Research Institution and comments on the lack of interest in Chemotherapy from the clinicians. The correspondence between 1948 and 1951 contains many references to the founding and scientific organisation of the John Curtin Medical School at the Australian National University, the first research university in the country (founded 1946). Albert (Head of Medical Chemistry) and Eccles (Head of Physiology) debate on the subdivision and hierarchy of the departments, i.e. whether it would be preferable to devote a full chair to Pharmacology (closer to Chemistry) or to Biophysics (closer to Physiology). The discussion is triggered by the possibility of hiring Bernhard Katz but he would not accept less than a professorship. Issues raised are the epistemological and medical value of the two disciplines and the mission of a research university.
