November 8, 1825, when, led by Samuel F. B. Morse, a group of thirty artists met to discuss the formation of a union for the advancement of their profession. On this day, the direct precursor to the Academy, the New-York Drawing Association, was born. ...At that time, the American Academy of Fine Arts (founded December 3, 1802, and originally known as the New-York Academy of Fine Arts), provided inconsistent access to, and, on occasion, barred artists from the only collection of antique casts in New York City. ... On January 14, 1826, the fledgling organization broke with the older institution, and renamed itself the National Academy of the Arts of Design. ... As opposed to the two main academies in the country predating the National Academy of Design—the aforementioned American Academy of Fine Arts (founded 1802) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (founded 1805)—which consisted mostly of businessmen and collectors aimed at cultivating public taste and commercial gain, the NAD was founded by a concern for the needs of artists. The NAD was the first institution in the US founded by and under the exclusive control of professional artists.
1826-1828 offizieller Name: National Academy of the Arts of Design. In 1828 the name of the organization was shortened to the National Academy of Design. In 1997 the name of the institution was expanded to the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts. The name of the body of Academicians remains the National Academy of Design.
